FROM EARTH TO VALUE

LIVING LAB EARTH BLOCKS (leemsteen)

Living lab in 3 major parts

The Living Lab is divided into three major parts, each with its own objectives, actors involved and methods. Between the three parts, insights are exchanged, and results are shared with the broad target group of building professionals, students and end users. In addition to the research activities aimed at building up additional knowledge, each module involves multidisciplinary collaboration through co-creation with involved stakeholders around specific cases.

part 1

Exploring possible earth block applications in the Flemish building sector

part 2

Researching, implementing and evaluating earth block masonry for interior walls

part 3

Interacting with end users and activating the larger target group

Explorative cases

In cases of type 1, innovative design solutions or applications of earth blocks are explored and validated with mockups and prototypes and possibly calculations, simulations and lab experiments. (Future) designers and engineers are challenged to use the qualities of earth blocks as a starting point for the design while at the same time responding to the limitations of the material.

Real-life cases

The application of earth blocks in practice is still limited in Western Europe. For upscaling the implementation, it is necessary to investigate some technical and organisational aspects and develop design solutions (building systems, constructional details) for real-life cases. The design and implementation is done in a co-creative setting with building professionals involving architects, contractors, engineering offices, earth block experts and manufacturers and a multidisciplinary research team.

The design and implementation process and the subsequent evaluation are extensively documented so that the lessons learnt can be included in the following cases and serve as a basis for developing practical guidelines for the design and execution of earth masonry.

Demoproject

Finally, in case type 3, interaction and co-creation with local actors and end users (citizens, school children, authorities, companies...) is key. While designing and building a participatory demoproject, user experiences, preferences, and perceptions are investigated. At the same time, awareness is created about the finiteness of raw materials and the environmental impact of building materials.
