Building Beyond Bricks Festival

BUILDING FESTIVAL
2024

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN SUSTAINABILITY
AND REGENERATIVE MATERIALS?

Come and discover them with us during our Building Festival (19 April - 05 May).
You can come to follow lectures, be part of workshops or spontaneously start helping out with the ongoing construction of the pavilion in the Pastorie garden. No previous experience is needed, unless stated otherwise. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see many of you soon.

A cosy get-together around a campfire, where we can dream ahead about the festival. There will be drinks and bites, marshmallows and a campfire.

Do you like working with wood and you would like to learn a new technique? Have you never worked with wood before, but you were always into shakes? Or are you just curious about how roof tiles are made? Come and join us, to discover the ins and outs of shakemaking. During this workshop you will learn how to make traditional roof tiles from scratch, the roof tiles that will be used in the pavillion.

During our lunchbreak we will discuss how shakes are used in architecture, through a couple of examples and applications of shakes. The ideal moment to get inspired, in order to find new ways to apply your newly acquired skill.

Have you ever seen the buildings around you as material treasures? It is said that taking a walk is the best remedy to come back to a problem and think outside of the box. Quite literally, we will take you on a walk past different buildings on the Noord-Zuid-axis, and rediscover the potential of these hidden treasures.

During this workshop you will learn to build an oven out of earth bricks, while personalising them with your names. From dust to brick, from brick to masonry, from masonry to an oven.

This workshop with Alejandro Haiek is intended for PhD students. It will seek new forms of correlation between social landscapes, ecosystem services, and post-industrial geographies, engaging with the agents as artisctic translations.

The daily path of the pastor, where he walked and prayed, becomes the path of the people of Helchteren. We will decorate stones together, all are welcome. With these stones we will then retrace the path into the grounds of the garden. Tracing a memory of the past in order to create a work of land art for the future.

To end the festival and the different workshops organized, we propose for the Pastorie and its different spaces to be taken over again by you. A moment to exchange experiences, to tell stories, to ask questions and to test things out.

We will host a big dinner to officially close the Building Festival. It's a moment of exchange, of handover, both metaphorically and literally. The idea is that everyone brings something to eat and we can all taste each others creations, while spending a beautiful evening together.
