In Weert (The Netherlands), the Maastricht-based architectural firm 'de nieuwe context' is working with Spanish earth blocks from the producer 'Fetdeterra'. They are constructing a sustainable and contemporary house that integrates seamlessly into its surroundings. The architect explains that the shape of the house is inspired by the traditional long-aisle farms that were once found in the region, and these principles are clearly reflected in the layout of the home.

Both the architect and the client started the design from their shared sustainable ambitions, leading to the use of a timber frame structure in combination with earth blocks.

The high stabilisation rate of the Fetdeterra earth blocks allows for the masonry to be applied both in the interior and exterior. The project is remarkable not only for the application of exterior masonry but also for the spatial indoor-outdoor relationship it creates. The architect chose these specific earth blocks early in the design process because of their 1-meter length, which yields a beautiful result as the spaces are strongly aligned with the size of the blocks.

Meanwhile, work diligently continued on the project, and the earth block masonry for both the interior and exterior has been completed. Progress was also made on the flooring and the interior finishing.
